I don’t know what your stance is on the sword of the spirit, but I can tell you it’s not a physical sword. This sword is of the spirit so what does a spiritual sword look like. The sword of the spirit is the word of God. It’s not the bible as there are many who speak in the bible, but it is what God has said.

The greatest example of the sword of the spirit in action is Jesus. Look at all 3 temptations. He responded to the devil using the sword of the spirit. Let’s look at Matthew 4 where the temptations are written. The first temptation is the lust of the flesh. The devil tempts Jesus with food. He tells Him if He is the Son of God that Jesus can turn stones into bread. So if you are a son of God that is possible. Read how Jesus responds! He responds with what God has said which is the word of God from Deuteronomy 8.

Matthew 4:3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

Deuteronomy 8:3 So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.

The second temptation is the pride of life. Jesus was taken to the pinnacle of the temple. He was asked to throw Himself down and the devil trying to out play Jesus, uses the scriptures against Jesus from Psalm 91. Jesus responds quoting what God has said in Deuteronomy 6.

Matthew 4:5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

He shall give His angels charge over you,’

and,

In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
’ ”

Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

Psalm 91:11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone
.

Deuteronomy 6:16 You shall not tempt the Lord your God as you tempted Him in Massah.

The third temptation is the lust of the eyes. The devil tempts Jesus with riches and glory if He would bow down and worship him. Many people today have their eyes on riches, glory or even their own circumstances rather than worshipping God as they should. Jesus responds the devil with the word of God in Deuteronomy 6 again.

Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’

Deuteronomy 6:13 You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name

The 3 temptations are the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and the pride of life.

1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

The sword of the spirit is the word of God of what He has said. We use this against the devil and not people as our struggle isn’t against people. I pray that this blesses you.
