How many of you know the difference between the old man and the new man? “For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that OUR OLD MAN was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” The old man is the old you. “But you have not so learned Christ, IF INDEED YOU HAVE HEARD HIM AND HAVE BEEN TAUGHT BY HIM, AS THE TRUTH IS IN JESUS: that you PUT OFF, concerning your former conduct, THE OLD MAN which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.” You have to see yourself separate from your old you.
The new man is a different person. This new person doesn’t live from the flesh, rather they live from the spirit. It’s not just living in the spirit that makes you a new man, but being united with Christ in the spirit makes you a new creation. The two have become one in spirit. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; IT IS A GIFT OF GOD, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, CREATED IN CHRIST FOR GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh––who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands–– that at that time YOU WERE WITHOUT CHRIST, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and STRANGERS FROM THE COVENANTS OF PROMISE, HAVING NO HOPE AND WITHOUT GOD IN THE WORLD. BUT NOW IN CHRIST JESUS you who once were far off HAVE BEEN BROUGHT NEAR BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST. For HE HIMSELF IS OUR PEACE, WHO HAS MADE BOTH ONE, and HAS BROKEN DOWN THE MIDDLE WALL OF SEPARATION, HAVING ABOLISHED IN HIS FLESH THE ENMITY, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so AS TO CREATE ONE NEW MAN FROM THE TWO, THUS MAKING PEACE, and that HE MIGHT RECONCILE THEM BOTH TO GOD IN ONE BODY THROUGH THE CROSS, THEREBY PUTTING TO DEATH THE ENMITY.” Some teach that the peace is between Jew and Gentile, but that’s wrong. Jesus came to make peace between you and God. “Now all things are of God, WHO RECONCILED US TO HIMSELF THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, and has given us THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION, that is, that GOD WAS IN CHRIST RECONCILING THE WORLD TO HIMSELF, NOT IMPUTING THEIR TRESPASSES TO THEM, and HAS COMMITED TO US THE WORD OF RECONCILIATION. Now then, WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST, AS THOUGH GOD WERE PLEADING THROUGH US: WE IMPLORE YOU ON CHRIST’S BEHALF, BE RECONCILED TO GOD. FOR HE MADE HIM WHO KNEW NO SIN TO BE SIN FOR US, THAT WE MIGHT BECOME THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN HIM.”
