There are many who think that the Sabbath is a day of rest. You are correct in your assumption, but there is more to the Sabbath than you may realize. Let’s dig into this together.

When God spoke the 10 commandments in Exodus 20, one of the commandments does refer to the Sabbath day. Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holySix days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Every seventh day we are to remember the Lord and keep it holy. That’s seem to be a simple task to complete.

Do you think that this really pleased the Lord for you to remember Him every seven days? Or do you think that when you sin unintentionally, you would offer a bull or a goat for your sins? When Jesus was teaching, He was teaching continuously. Jesus was doing things on the Sabbath which was contrary to what the religious people were taught and understood. Jesus corrected them with regards to the Sabbath. Matthew 12:1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath! But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. Matthew 12:9 Now when He had departed from there, He went into their synagogue. 10 And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked Him, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—that they might accuse Him. 11 Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other. 14 Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.

We see that through the scripture we read that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath being a day of rest; our rest is to be in Jesus. Not every seventh day, but every day. This is why it is written; Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

We see that our Sabbath day is in Jesus as our rest is in Him. It’s not for a seventh day rest, but everyday. As we walk and sometimes struggle with the enemy, we can rest and be assured that our King will help us in our time of need if we can only trust Him with all our heart.
