I want to look at this not from an obligation, but from the heart. Is this what we really are to do to please God? Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Many don’t realize that tithing is of the law. Jesus mentions this; Matthew 23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of THE LAW: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Mercy and faith are not of the law. Paul said it this way. Romans 4:13 For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.
When Abraham gave to Melchizedek, he didn’t give out of obligation, but gave from the heart. This is the point of the tithe. This is why it is written; 2 Corinthians 9:6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance FOR EVERY GOOD WORK. Some church leaders tend to use Malachi 3 as an obligation for you to give when the church is running low on funds. Interesting that the leaders have to go to the congregation rather than God! If God is really there, then He is the One who will provide. You don’t have to ask anyone for anything, but Him! Remember, back then there was such a thing as a temple tax.
When you give, do you give what is Caesar’s or God’s? In todays perspective, do you give what belongs to the banks or God’s. Look at money today. Who’s inscription is written on it? On the USA bill says Federal Reserve note. On the Canadian bill says Bank of Canada. Do you really think that this belongs to you? Do you believe that God wants what belongs to this world?
