I have heard from some denominations say that there is one baptism and yet some others say there is two baptisms. Which is right? I will go into the word to see what He says regarding this issue
Now, the ones who say their is one baptism, referring to when Jesus was baptized by John, Jesus came out of the water, He received the Holy Spirit as it fell as a dove. This proves there is one baptism that when you are baptized, you receive the Holy Spirit. Well, when you look at this in fine detail, there is actually two baptisms that happened in that situation. There are many examples of two baptisms in the Bible. I will show you some of them.
Lets first look at the baptism of Jesus. Matthew 3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. Interesting that Jesus said that baptism is to fulfill all righteousness. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. So Heaven opened and the Spirit of God descended and alighting upon Him. Jesus was born again in water and Spirit as it is written in John 3. John baptized Jesus in water and Father baptized Jesus in the Spirit as it fell from heaven as a dove. Father confirms this by saying what’s written in verse 17. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
In Acts 8, Peter and John went to Samaria. the people there had been baptized into the Name of Jesus but had not yet received the Holy Spirit. Simon saw that the laying on of hands people would receive the Holy Spirit so he could make money from this. Some people try to make money with Holy Spirit, some people resist Him. Religious people always resist the Holy Spirit and what He is doing. They will even call the Holy Spirit, Beelzebub or a demon, as they can’t understand the Holy Spirit but Jesus said Luke 11:11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him
In Acts 10, the Holy Spirit fell upon Cornelius and his family yet they weren’t baptized yet. Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
When Paul arrived in Ephesus in Acts 19, he asked them “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” They only knew the baptism of John.
Once you understand that their is two baptism, you will get the understanding of how to operate from the Spirit. Water baptism is of repentance and the baptism of the Holy Spirit is from the Kingdom of God. Jesus told His disciples, but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8. Paul understood this 1 Corinthians 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.
